A Gentle Start to the New Year: My Intentions for Year 2026

There’s something refreshing about the beginning of January.

I didnt really have a lot decorations to pack and I’m not rushing to put them away. The house feels quieter, and the excitement of the new year slowly settles into ordinary life. While many people jump into ambitious resolutions and packed schedules, I’ve found myself craving something different.

I don’t want to sprint into the year.

I want to walk into it.

Over the years, I’ve realized that the goals I keep aren’t usually the loud, dramatic ones. They’re the quiet habits that become part of everyday life—the little choices that slowly shape who I become.

So instead of making a long list of resolutions, I’m choosing a few simple intentions to guide me through January.

1. Create More Than I Consume

As someone who creates content, it’s easy to spend hours scrolling for inspiration.

But I’ve learned that inspiration often finds me when I’m actually living life instead of watching everyone else’s.

This month, I want to spend more time writing, photographing, filming, and creating stories worth remembering.

Whether it’s documenting our home, sharing a quiet walk, cooking with fresh ingredients, or writing on this blog, I want to create from experience rather than comparison.

2. Read More

This year, I want to be more intentional about slowing down and spending time in quiet reflection.

Reading has always been a way for me to learn, grow, and find inspiration, but I often struggle to finish the books I start. What tends to work better for me are audiobooks I can listen to while doing something with my hands. I’ve tried to make reading a consistent habit, but when life gets busy, it’s often the first thing I set aside—and eventually forget.

This month, I want to make space each day to read, even if it’s just a page in the morning or before bed. I especially want to spend time in the Bible and daily devotionals that nourish my soul. I want my faith to grow through the words I take in each day.

2. Pray More

Alongside reading, I want to deepen my prayer life.

Not in a rushed or routine way, but in a way that truly honors the Lord. Prayer is our line of communication with the One who created us, yet it can be one of the hardest things to practice consistently. Still, as a Christian woman, I know I must rely on the Lord’s strength to overcome that struggle.

4. Spend More Time Outdoors

Winter may not seem like the obvious season to be outside, but I’ve learned that nature has a way of slowing my thoughts.

Even a short walk reminds me to pay attention—to the bare trees, crisp air, birds, and changing light.

It doesn’t have to be a grand adventure.

Sometimes a 20-minute walk, even to just check on my garden, is enough to reset my day.

6. Be More Present

Life has a way of rushing us from one task to the next.

Content deadlines, household responsibilities, errands, and endless notifications can make every day feel busy.

This January, I want to practice being fully present wherever I am.

When I’m cooking, I want to enjoy the process.

When I’m with family, I want to put my phone away.

When I’m creating content, I want to enjoy the creativity instead of focusing only on numbers.

Those moments often become the ones I treasure most.

6. Choose Progress Over Perfection

Perfection has delayed more dreams than failure ever could.

I’ve spent too much time waiting until something felt “ready.”

This year, I want to embrace imperfect action.

Publish the blog.

Upload the video.

Take the photo.

Learn along the way.

Progress always teaches more than perfection.

7. Practice Gratitude Every Day

It’s easy to focus on everything we still want.

But gratitude helps us notice everything we already have.

I’m hoping to end each day by remembering a few simple blessings.

A delicious meal.

A conversation with someone I love.

A peaceful morning.

A beautiful sunset.

A completed project.

Those little moments often become the richest parts of life.

Looking Ahead

I don’t know everything this year will bring.

Some plans will work out exactly as I imagine.

Others will change along the way.

But I’m learning that life doesn’t have to be rushed to be meaningful.

January doesn’t have to begin with pressure.

It can begin with grace.

It can begin gently.

And maybe that’s exactly what many of us need.
